Windows Phone gains ground in Europe

Windows Phone gains ground in Europe

Windows Phone has hit double-digit share in two of Europe's biggest mobile markets, thanks to Nokia shifting to more low to midrange handsets.

As you might expect, new research out today shows that Android is Europe's favorite smartphone OS by a wide mile. But Windows Phone is turning into a serious contender. According to figures out Monday from researchers Kantar WorldPanel ComTech, Android featured on just over 70 percent of smartphones sold in the three months up to August across Europe's five biggest markets: Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Equally unsurprisingly, iOS is in second position with 16 percent of the smartphone market in Europe -- a year over year rise of around two percentage points for both operating systems.
Windows Phone, meanwhile, continues to grow its share in the five countries, hitting 9.2 percent -- around double its 5.1 percent share for the same period last year.
The jump has been fueled by significant gains in the three major European markets: France, Germany, and Great Britain. In the latter, its share has risen from 4.5 percent a year ago to 12 percent today, while in Germany it's grown from 3.8 percent to 8.8 percent -- the first time it's hit double-digit share in either country.
In Germany, that puts Windows Phone only one percentage point behind iOS in market share.
"Windows Phone's latest wave of growth is being driven by Nokia's expansion into the low- and midrange market with the Lumia 520 and 620 handsets. These models are hitting the sweet spot with 16- to 24-year-olds and 35- to 49-year-olds, two key groups that look for a balance of price and functionality in their smartphone," Dominic Sunnebo, strategic insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said in a statement.
And despite recent turbulence and a proposed $7.2 billion takeover by Microsoft, Nokia, Windows Phone's main hardware champion, is growing its own market share across some of Europe's biggest markets. (Nokia accounted for four in five of all Windows Phone device sales across the five markets.)
For the three months to the end of August, Nokia bagged 7.8 percent of all smartphone sales, up from 6.9 percent a year ago, inching up on third-place Sony, whose share stands at 8.2 percent, a slight rise over a year ago. LG is also seeing something of a comeback, increasing its European share to 6.1 percent from 2.1 percent a year ago.
Following its recent troubles, BlackBerry's share has seen the biggest dip in Europe, falling from 5.8 percent of all smartphones sold in the five markets to 2.4 percent today.

BlackBerry and Surface 2: The Fight to Reclaim Past Glory
Both BlackBerry and Microsoft have been in far stronger positions with regard to personal technology. At one time, Microsoft was contending for leadership in smartphones against Palm and BlackBerry, and BlackBerry took leadership only to lose it to Apple and then Samsung. Microsoft put tablets on the map in the early part of last decade, but it missed a memo and Apple refined them to success.

Scientists Catch Up With Jedi in Understanding Light
Scientists from Harvard, MIT and CIT have demonstrated that light can behave in a way previously observed only in science fiction -- that is, photons can bond and create a molecule. The fundamental properties of light derive from the fact that photons, which are the quanta of light, do not interact with one another. Two crossed beams of light pass through each other, for example.

Long-range shot

Long-range shot Tracking Point, a startup based in Austin, Texas, just began selling some of the world's most high-tech long-range shooting rifles available. These guns come wired with a small computer that provides a "guided trigger," tag and lock technology, and a Wi-Fi antenna, which lets users gather ballistics data in real time and live-stream their shots to share on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, or e-mail.
The key to Tracking Point's firearms is that anyone -- even someone who's never picked up a rifle -- can hit a target at distances of up to 1,200 yards, or 12 football fields, with near 100 percent accuracy.

DARPA Spends $10 Million To Make BigDog Stronger And Stealthier

DARPA Spends $10 Million To Make BigDog Stronger And Stealthier

BigDog is a cinderblock-hurling robot that shambles like a something out of Lovecraftian horror. DARPA and Boston Dynamics are developing the four-legged robot to go anywhere troops can go on foot, while carrying up to 400 pounds of gear for them. It's basically a donkey, except without a head or any distracting biological needs.
Last week, DARPA awarded a $10 million contract to Boston Dynamics to further develop BigDog, with a planned culmination in a military exercise two years from now. To reduce risks to soldiers in combat, the research agency has asked Boston Dynamics to build a quieter and more bullet-resistant version of the robot. Scary.
Ideally, the average soldier carries no more than 48 pounds of gear into battle, and 72 pounds when marching. War rarely meets ideal conditions. Paratroopers fighting in Iraq in April 2003 carried up to 101 pounds, which rapidly led to exhaustion and proved taxing even for physically fit soldiers. Body armor accounts for between 20 percent and 30 percent of the weight, and obviously must be worn by the soldier. But spare batteries, extra socks, hygiene kits, and ponchos don't always need to be carried by humans. BigDog would follow closely behind a leader and obey voice commands. It could also serve as a mobile power station, recharging batteries for troops on the move.
While BigDog development continues, Marines at Fort Devens, Mass., are set to test the robot as-is this November. Walking at a pace of 7 mph to 8 mph, the robot should keep up with the Marines, and do so as quietly as any trooper.

GOOGLE REVEALS NEW SEARCH UPGRADE

 Hummingbird

The new algorithm, codenamed Hummingbird, is the first major upgrade for three years.
It has already been in use for about a month, and affects about 90% of Google searches.

At a presentation on Thursday, the search giant was short on specifics but said Hummingbird is especially useful for longer and more complex queries.

Google stressed that a new algorithm is important as users expect more natural and conversational interactions with a search engine - for example, using their voice to speak requests into mobile phones, smart watches and other wearable technology.

Hummingbird is focused more on ranking information based on a more intelligent understanding of search requests, unlike its predecessor, Caffeine, which was targeted at better indexing of websites.
It is more capable of understanding concepts and the relationships between them rather than simply words, which leads to more fluid interactions. In that sense, it is an extension of Google's

"Knowledge Graph" concept introduced last year aimed at making interactions more human.
In one example, shown at the presentation, a Google executive showed off a voice search through her mobile phone, asking for pictures of the Eiffel Tower. After the pictures appeared, she then asked how tall it was. After Google correctly spoke back the correct answer, she then asked "show me pictures of the construction" - at which point a list of images appeared.

UK Parliament Blasts Google Over Piracy
Thursday - September 26, 2013
Departing from the normal routine of chiding Google over taxes, British parliament is trying its hand at chiding Google over piracy. A select committee accused Google of apathetically failing to curb piracy. The chairman of the committee, John Whittingdale, said that MPs were "unimpressed by Google's continued failure to stop" displaying search results for illegal content.

The Secrets to GTA's Massive Mainstream Success

Saturday - September 28, 2013
It's not every day that a video game becomes a mainstream tech story. Then again, it's not every day that a video game promptly records $1 billion in sales. Grand Theft Auto V did just that, however, eclipsing the 10-figure mark three days after its Sept. 17 release. The game's success is an emphatic declaration that the GTA brand -- first introduced in 1997 -- is still going strong, and that it will be a force as the next generation of game consoles comes to life.

IPHONE 5S REVIEW

Same look, small screen, big potential

The good: The iPhone 5S delivers an improved camera, a nifty fingerprint sensor, and a next-gen CPU and motion-tracking chip. Apple throws in the iWork app suite for free. iOS 7 adds some nice step-ups, too, including AirDrop file transfers and the Android-like Control Center.
The bad: External design is identical to that of the iPhone 5, including a 4-inch screen that looks downright tiny next to Android competitors. For now, the fingerprint sensor only works with Apple apps. The 64-bit A7 processor and M7 motion-tracking chip don't have killer apps yet. iOS 7 differences are potentially jarring for longtime iPhone users.
The bottom line: The iPhone 5S is not a required upgrade, but it's easily the fastest and most advanced Apple smartphone to date.
Configurations
There's no 128GB iPhone this year; you'll have to once again pick between 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB, at the same $199/$299/$399 prices. In the US, Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon are the three carriers to offer the iPhone 5S under contract; T-Mobile sells the iPhone 5S in an unlocked, contract-free version that costs $649 for 16GB, $749 for 32GB, and $849 for 64GB.
All versions come with the same A7 processor.

Curiosity in Mars

CURIOSITY FINDS WATER AND POISON IN MARS

Where is Curiosity now?
The little rover that could is still in the Gale Crater, moving as fast as it can toward Mount Sharp. Mount Sharp has geologic layers that may tell scientists more about Mars' history. The mountain may also contain organic compounds.

IPHONE 5

IS IPHONE REALLY WORTH IT?
IN MY OPINION IT IS.

iPhone has received nine straight J.D. Power and Associates awards for customer satisfaction

Apparently love can be measured. In nine straight studies by J.D. Power and Associates, iPhone has been ranked "Highest in Customer Satisfaction" in the US.1.

Only iPhone has the Retina display

The pixel density on the Retina display is so high, your eye can't distinguish individual pixels. Words are crisp. Images are bright and beautiful. Once you see the Retina display, you're never satisfied with anything less.

Ultra-fast wireless

iPhone 5 connects to more networks all over the world, including HSPA, HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA.2 And dual-band 802.11n accellerates your Wi-Fi experience. So you can browse, download and stream content remarkably fast, no matter where you are.

The world's most popular camera

The iSight camera on iPhone takes such high-quality photos, it may be the only camera you ever need. The advanced optics capture great photo data, and then the hardware and software work together to make behind-the-scenes image and colour adjustments.
Top 3 Most Popular Cameras on Flickr - 1. iPhone 4S, 2. iPhone 5, 3. iPhone 4

Great battery life

It's impressive that iPhone 5 gives you long battery life so you can easily make it through the day.3 But it's extraordinary that such a powerful battery fits into such a small and light design.

Powerful A6 chip

Just about everything you do on iPhone 5 is noticably faster.4 And with faster graphics, gameplay is amazingly realistic. Best of all, the A6 chip is designed to work with iOS 6 to be extremely power efficient.

iTunes Store + App Store

Together, they offer millions of ways to be entertained from one trusted source: Apple. The iTunes Store is the world's largest entertainment store. And the App Store has over 800,000 apps - all reviewed by Apple to guard against malware.5

iOS 6

iPhone is so easy thanks to iOS 6 - the world's most advanced mobile operating system - and all its innovative features. Updates download straight to iPhone, so the latest iOS version is just a tap away.

Siri - the intelligent assistant

Siri lets you use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, make calls, check scores and more. It understands what you say, knows what you mean and helps you do the things you do every day. All you have to do is ask.

iCloud

iCloud stores your content - your music, photos, apps, mail, contacts, calendars, documents and more - and wirelessly pushes it to all your devices. It's seamlessly integrated into your apps, so you're up to date everywhere you go.

APPLE vs. ANDROID

MANY PEOPLE ASK THEMSELVES THIS QUESTION?

Making the decision between an iPhone and one of the many Android smartphones is largely a matter of preference. There’s a lot to love – and perhaps hate – about both of these mobile OS platforms. But such things are highly subjective, so it can be difficult to unequivocally distinguish which platform is superior.
Apple is a tightly woven ecosystem, one that can be hard to abandon – both because change can be inconvenient and because of the fierce loyalty many feel to the beloved product and brand. As for Android, the platform boasts an array of devices and has no shortfalls that third-party apps can’t fix. If you’re already an iPhone user, you may not find anything worth jumping ship for. However, if you’re looking for something other than Apple’s hallmark flavor, Android may just be the right mobile OS for you.
